| 2010.01.01 | Sparky | What happened? |
|
| 2010.01.01 | guess | I tossed away my Italian mistress in a fit of non-attention, on Aufferheidie road, in central Oregon, and passed it off as something I could no explain, only to have my boyfriend help rebuild her for me so I could blow up the engine due to low oil. |

| 2010.01.01 | Sparky | What happened? |
|
| 2008.05.29 | Rob | Left the house this morning and I was leering at the women on the street the way I do every day. I'd just finished saying "Hiya sweet buns!" in my head when I realized I was looking at my girlfriend, who was walking to the bus stop. Figured I'd go around the block so I could salute her properly with a nice big wheelie past the bus stop.
When I got around to the main street again there was a lot of traffic. After finding a little gap, I pulled out and executed a satisfying wheelie for my lady but just as I was ready to set the front down my hand slipped and I pushed on the throttle rocker plastic doodad that sticks out from my throttle grip sending the front wheel a bit higher.
I managed to get the front end set down just in time to center punch the solid steel rear bumper of a smallish pickup truck. This sent the back wheel way up in the air (I am not a stoppie master) and I got to contemplate what might happen next. I can't tell you if I put my foot down but the next thing I remember is rolling along again behind the pickup as he signaled to turn onto a side street and discuss my little mishap.
I apologized profusely and claimed that it was pure distraction due to seeing my GF at the bus stop and given that his truck took zero damage he was mollified and went on his way with a mild admonition that I should pay attention.
At the time I didn't think there was any damage but I am pretty sure I've bent one or both of my front forks and there is a crack next to the front fender mounting point that may be new. When the bike is tracking straight the handlebars are definitely not level. |

| 2008.03.15 | Hans (the knucklehead) | I call it a senior moment. My wife says it was another example of my knuckleheadnes. She's probably right. Going 60 down a 4 lane divided parkway. Itis a beautiful day in Sout Texas and I'm going camping. My 2007 Kawasaki Concours is fully loaded with camping gear. I'm daydreaming. I look up and cars are stopped. First time in my 40 years of continuous riding that I truly locked it up. The road was dry with realatively new pavment. Even so, I went down hard on my right side and watched as my bike went sling on i's side in front of me. Thank goodness for AGAT ( |

| 2008.03.15 | Hans (the Knucklehead) | I called it a senior moment (I'm 57). My wife said it was another example of my knuckleheadness. She's probably right. I now had my second mishap (see Hans 2005.05.17) in 40 years of continuous riding. IT was a bright, clear south Texas daY; the kind made for riding. I was on a 4 lane divided parkway, fully loaded with camping gear on my way to a great Texas state park. I was daydreaming for maybe 5 seconds. I looked up and there was a line of cars stopped in front of me. For the first time ever, I grabbed a handfull of the front brake and stomped on the rear. Both brakes locked and I went down doing 60 MPH. I watched as my bike slid down the pavement in front of me. Thank goodness for AGAT (All the Gear All the Time). I was amazed that the bike and I just slid and didn't hit anything. Good samaritans stopped and helped me pick up my bike. Another guy took a shovel out of his car and scraped up my pride from the road (at least what was left of it). With everyone staring, I felt about 2 inches tall. I could hear all of the wives saying in my rattled brain, "That's why you're not getting one of those things." Minor damage to one tough bike. Front brake lever, right side foot peg bracket, and a nice groove sliced into the right side saddle bag; plus some other cosmetic scrapes. Not bad. I had no injuries, other than a nice big bruise on my right cheek leading down to my knee. Large scrape on helmet, shredded gloves, blue jeans, and an almost new Olympia armored jacket was toast. I sure am glad my wife gave me that jacket for X-Mas. It was a very small price to pay for being able to get up and ride the bike back home. Lesson learned: pay attention you knucklehead. It only took a few seconds of inattention to almost become someones bumper ornament. Also, when I purchase my Wing next year, it will have ABS. I feel that I wouldn't have bitten the dust if the brakes had not locked up, and I'm pretty sure I had enough distance to stop before hitting anything. The road was dry and relatively new. I never was a proponent of ABS before, I am now. Oh yeah, remember to wear AGAT. |

| 2007.09.23 | Gooz | Was riding on Vashon Island on my '04 ZX10-R at about 45-50mph when a deer literally leapt off the side of a hill and onto the front of my bike. Busted the nose of the bike right off and highsided me onto the pavement then into the weeds.
Toll: Dead bike, riding gear totaled, banged up knees and *LOTS* of bruising. I HATE BAMBI!!!
Oh and one VERY DEAD FSCKIN' DEER!!! |
|
| 2007.05.24 | SteveG | Stupid Volvo failed to yield right-of-way. I saw her out with left peripheral vision, hit the brakes, and managed to keep the bike upright. Hit her front right tire, slid forward to pop out the lower bumper and do something that caused blue stuff to leak from windshield washer reservoir. No damage to me or bike.

| 2007.04.13 | Susan | Was out practicing slow turns, too slow apparently, but I'd only ridden 5 miles on my new Morphous scooter and what did I know? Scoot fell over, crushing my right ankle against a curbing....2 blocks from home, 10:30 am, no other vehicles involved, extremely inexperienced rider with no training, serious misunderstanding of gyroscopic forces, 2-3 mph. My fault. |
|
| 2007.01.04 | Ducky | Motorcycle: 2004 Yamaha V-Star 650 Classic Time: Approx 1000 hours local Temp: 49deg Farenheit Speed: Approx 55 mph. PPE: Full-face HJC CL-14, leather jacket, jeans, all-leather boots. I was following a Ford F-250 in passing a semi on a two-lane road. The semi had slowed to execute a right turn into a business and we both accelerated to pass in the oncoming lane with no traffic ahead of us.
As we returned to our lane of travel, I noticed that I was coming up on the F250 and was too close. I attempted to slow down by applying the front brake. I locked my front brake and slid with my front tire wobbling. I recovered but was still too close. I braked again and again the front tire locked, slid, and wobbled. My Rear tire came around to my left side and I fell on my right side and low-side slid under the rear-right side of the truck, stopping when I hit the right rear tire of the truck.
My helmet took the full force of my head impacting the ground. I slid with my right leg trapped under the rear of the bike for approx. 5 yards before stopping, face-down, on the road with my right leg under the bike and the foot, ankle, and leg turned outboard.
The vehicle occupant lifted the bike off of me and set it upright.
Nothing seemed broken. Went to hospital anyway.
As I was in enough pain, the police simply gave me a warning and wished me well in my recovery and search for a new bike, as I had totaled mine.
Seven months and $17,000.00 later i finally have a new bike. |

| 2006.08.13 | Jim&Mariann | A woman, heading north on a rural state road, and my passenger and I heading south on my '05 Honda VTX 1300.The woman stops at a light to turn left, the light was green for both sides, she waits untill I am about 40 feet away, and she then decides to turn. I hit both brakes HARD and try to go around her front end,but she keeps on rolling. The bike hits just behind her front bumper. I go one way,Mariann goes another way, thru the air. I end up with a double compound fracture of my left leg, requiring rods, screws, pins and plastic surgery.Mariann ends up with scratches and abraisions. VTX is totaled, car gets a smashed headlight and slight dent in right front fender. It is now January and I am STILL not recovered. Managed to buy a new Harley V-Rod tho! :-) |

| 2006.07.29 | Shasta & Sal | [posted to WL] > Thanks Shasta and Michael for organizing. > Not a bad ride.
Y'know, that's the danged nicest thing I could have heard this morning. *I* feel terribly sheepish. What kind of hostess crashes on her own ride, eh? I'm sure Emily Post would be horrified.
So, for the record, since it is the tradition, here is the crash report:
* Damage to the rider : stiff neck, sore shoulder blade, nearly invisible scuff on forearm. Ego and confidence are in critical condition; survival expected but likely long term rehab required. Pride is in the morgue.
* Damage to the bike : headlight and instrument panel housing gone, handlebar bent, likely fixable dent in tank, various and sundry dings, one possibly destroyed Givi bag/plate. I rode her the 80 miles home, so I'm told by definition the damage "isn't bad", but it doesn't feel like it.
* Damage to gear : I did at least one somersault over the handlebars, so a new helmet will be needed. The Heine Gericke Mesh jacket held up perfectly, and did its job. Two thumbs up.
* Cause : pure rider error. I remember staring at the edge of the road as I was leaving a turn and thinking about how sharply the pavement ended. Next thing I knew, I'd gone where I was looking. :(
I think the root cause was poor mental state. I had a wicked headache and was feeling generally spacey. Not a good state for a ride. I probably should have excused myself, but I figured I'd take it easy, and then I started having fun... but I had no mental margin at that point.
Monday, Sal goes to Dave's Great Motorcycle Emporium and SuperMall for repair. New headlight and instrument panel housings will be found, fabricated, or otherwise created. I'd already set a goal of getting a second bike in 2008, after the move, and I might actually have original parts collected by then. In the meanwhile, we have a lot of Oregon to explore together.
Postscript : Sal was indeed back on the road at the end of Monday, albeit with a bit of a frankenbike instrument panel. One month later, during the Gather rev-off, I blew a bottom bearing. I will be making her prettier again while she is apart for the engine work this winter. |

| 2006.07.14 | Howard | Approaching a right hand bend at 40 / 50mph, on a single carriageway road, a young lady coming in the opposite direction lost concentration (her words). She went straight on, across the double white lines onto my side of the road and into the side of my bike. The impact removed the cylinder from that side of my BMW and the drivers door from her car.
Leg broken, foot crushed, my bike and her car written off. She was fined £150. |

| 2006.04.27 | Cyber | Parking lot collision. Young gal driving across lanes in the parking lot, pulls out in front of me about 4 feet away. Grab binders, tuck front end, bike and Cyber wedge under front end of car. Injuries appear to be sprained wrist (possibly cartilage damage) and a bruised hip, but able to hobble around with a cane. Gixxer 1000 front end is demolished. |

| 2006.04.23 | S.T.L. | I was stupid. I left the bar feeling invincible. It had been an incredible day. I was out by myself on some empty back farm roads. The weather was perfect. I got to the bar afterwards. My buddies kept feeding me drinks. It was my fault, I drank them. Nothing could stop me. I don't remember some of the ride. I was on my way home. I decided to jump in the passing lane to pass a bunch of cars before I got to the intersection that way I wouldn't have to wait behind them all. My speed crept up in the shallow curve as I tried to squeeze in between two vehicles. I looked up and saw the curb. Then we struck the curb. The bike and I became airborne, striking a light pole. Bike was totaled. I severed two ligaments in my knee, paralyzed my shoulder for 5 months and partially dislocated it, dislocated my thumb and two of my fingers. There were a few minor injuries. I will ride again. I know I was wrong and I will probably never forgive myself. |

| 2006.02.22 | Mark Morrissey (TB1) | I swear, a skilled rider *could* have ridden over that snow field just fine. I just didn't have a skilled rider with me at the time.
Broken left mirror and turn signal, clutch lever and bar end weight bolt. |
|
| 2006.01.01 | Me | What happened?
Three different events over 4 years.
1) Riding while angry with the mindset 'only a scooter.' Scooters can cause painful roadrash too....
2) Riding a larger scooter. I was stopped at a traffic light in South Korea. It turned I accelerated hard and realized that a car was stopped across three lanes! Given the choice of
a) Crashing into the car and flying. or b) Trying a stunt you only see in the movies
I chose to avoid the car by riding between it's bumper and the nearby curb. Somehow (I still don't know how) I made it. There should have been a camera to see it..
3) Riding a motorcycle (cruiser style) on the coldest snowiest morning ever. The result? Three visits to the pavement over 2 hours. The cars weren't doing so well either. Since that day (and the attendant broken ribs) I don't ride on icy days ever. |
|
| 2006.01.01 | bambi on ice | I was backing my 1979 cb 750 limited edition out of the garage and my left heel stepped on a screw driver handle laid her over gently just a few scratches but ok lol couldn't ride for at least 1/2 hour because of uncontrolable laughter,Good thing no one saw me I hope. lol |
|
| 2006.01.01 | Wildkat | What happened?
It had just started raining when my husband and I rolled up to a light. He was in front and made it through no problem but was far enough ahead so that I got the red light. I tapped my brake and evidently hit some wet oil which threw my rear tire to the right. I was able to compensate... too much. I then started sliding to the other side and finally went down. Luckily, the light had just changed and all four sides to the intersection were stopped. I slid through the intersection with my bike sliding in front of me (just like you see on the races... it was actually pretty cool... well... since the bike and I came out relatively unscathed). I made it out with a very bruised hip and some minor rash on my arm. The worst part of it? It would have been my 4th anniversary with my first husband if we were still married... I went down in front of his place of work... while he was looking outside... with his new wife. I picked up my bruised ego and butt... and my bike as my current husband returned to help (took him long enough to realize I was no longer behind him) and was able to ride away. Thanking God the ENTIRE way home. |
|
| 2006.01.01 | Sparky | Pulled a 1/2 mile long wheelie on my Honda CR500R. The front tire stoped spinning in the air. When it came back down it bit hard and I got tank slapper. I ended up on the ground at about 60 mph and slid about 60 feet before coming to a stop. Road rash on my left arm elbow to wrist. Friction burns on my right palm, left stomach, knees. Broke my bikes cluch lever, scratched plastic, ruined new grips. My arm looks like beef jerkey, mmmmmmmm tasty! |
|
| 2006.01.01 | Avatar's friend | After just purchasing a new VTR, take her for a ride to friends place to gloat over the new purchase. Park the bike, and my friend asks if he can sit on it. he does so, andflicks up the stand, loses his footing and manages to drop the bike. Since it was dropped on grass, no sctratches, but have a slight crackin the left fairing, and twisted the front forks in their cuffs. 30 mins later, front wheel straight again. And important lesson learned. do not allow friends to sit on your bike. unless you know they can ride..... very well.
grrrrrrr |
|
| 2006.01.01 | Arclight | What happened? I was doing 60mph trying to beat the rain had dark clouds gathering above I don't like getting caught in a murderous storm....a fork in the road is coming up fast I turn my head to look back for some stupid reason when I look forwrd again I am heading stright for the last ride I will ever take my bike hits a patch of gravel and I fly into to the ditch I am thrown from the bike when i was able to stand I saw that my cell phone had fallen on the ground HMMMM I'll pick it up and call home...BIG MISTAKE as I grab the phone with my right hand I hear a gross crunching sound in my right shoulder of course drops and PAIN PAIN..go to the hospital major internal bleeding and I broke my clavical apart with jagged points stabbing me inside causing more severe damage.... |

| 2005.11.17 | SimplyMe | LOL...
Guess you'd say I'm a No0bie subscriber here on WetLeather. Recently met a fellow who visits, attends, and has now recommended someone new to come over and take a look see... Which happens to be SimpyMe ~ Rea ~ (is a nickname, btw), or to family and oldest friends, Reshel.
So, here I am.
I'd like to take you far back, before the this whole occurrence happened on November 17th, 05 @ approximately 10:59 AM after exiting onto Lake Washington Blvd, coming from the 520W freeway. For the moment it won’t be so detailed.
Word of mouth so works and I am one for it in every aspect. I’d like to be able to locate him for just a moment would be great. I’m going to have to set aside times to allow me to visit, read, and share what we all love to do…
…Ride Motorcycle!
Like I said I am so new to this, I need help. Not grasping exactly how WetLeather is accessed, where to post, or find gain the right information in order to use forum sight efficiently. Goal is to post, find, look, meet, and ride with. Who are here for that same purpose? Any help pointing me in the right direction in order get the motor purring.
Now back to the main TOPIC… Crashing!
I did, and it was my first! Praying it was the last!!
Due to my own curious nature, and overall wanting to place "all of the accident” in the right perspective, not only for me, but from questions people have asked regarding the overall incident. Seeing an accident of this type clearly generated such questions. I'll be running an exclusive story, in it's entirety from the original website I was initially participating in. I was writing in mid stride, before this whole ordeal began.
Pulling up the articles, you’ll have to go to "www.WominX.net". I personal will be doing a full investigation into this accident. Then, I’ll be able to come give back the WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHY, WHEN, and the HOW of it all for anyone wanting to know..
The Ride... ’05 Suzuki DRz400SM Rider Gender: Female Age: 40
WominX Woman rider literally catapulted head first off my bike. Setting body into full momentum to be flipped up & over the side guardrail… Visual similarity looked like I was on uneven bars… and lost dismount points for a 50+ feet dropped below into, Lake Washington. Hit the water with high impact enough for the midsize pack back and my pocket pouch purse to cascade right off my back. Popping up out of the water I realizing I wasn’t knocked out, didn’t lose limbs, but most importantly… I still had breath within me!!! I quickly surveyed and assessed the immediate situation. I became aware no one had seen the unscheduled plight into Lake Washington. I knew I had to get out of a bad situation. Knowing at any moment it could turn for the worst…
Ok … there’s your start. The rest will be published as an exclusive on the website I mention just a few paragraphs up. You will find Article links placed within the News Link. Any thing arises, I can be reached by IM or email if you have any problems or questions to ask.
Hospital stay: They admitted overnight for observation at Harborview Medical day of my arrival.
Next day on the “once more over” scheduled me to have a scan test ran. A new bruise surfaced on my abdomen. Finding it sent up a flag causing enough concern for me to have test done. Before I could take this scan test I had to drink a half gal of “something” to pass through. The tech personal came down from his department. Stood in front of me in hospital garb, with a rider’s gray, white, and black beanie, shooting off his first statement… “If you haven’t guessed it... as I am cutting him off in mid sentence with… Nope, would never have guessed you’re a motorcycle rider… Just chuckled for a sec or two then handed me a drink. I was to drink it over a time span of 90+ minutes. No less then 90 min overall time.
He gave me his ID name for this forum, but I can not figure out which direction to head into to find him. Any help… thanks… and greatly appreciate it.
Got to hit the hay… eyes are going out for the count.
Look forward to the “Whatever’s” Whoever’s, and the Whoa Nellie’s, being shared by the ones venturing back to get more,
My best to all ~ always ~ SimplyMe ~ ReA |

| 2005.09.03 | Larry Moecurly | I commute to work every morning in SF. I take the freeway and then get off and navigate a well-use surface road to get into the downtown area. The lights on that road are more-or-less timed. More-or-less meaning that if you drive agressively, you can make most of them.
I was coming up to an intersection, the light was green, and doing about 25-30. The traffic in front of me seemed a tad slow, so, I glanced over my right shoulder to see if I could change lanes. I guess I must have glanced too long (or maybe I was going to damn fast!), but when I looked back to my lane there was a pick-up truck stopped at the light and I was coming up FAST.
I tried to stop, but couldn't in time. I hit the truck on the rear passenger side. My bike stopped right there and I went flying into the next lane of traffic. Fortunately, the other traffic had come to a halt at the light. I got up fast, really fast. I wound up with a badly scraped knee and some road rash on my right forearm. Oh, yeah, did I mention that it was during a rare hot weather streak in SF and I was wearing a canvass jacket instead of my usual leathers? The bike, a 2002 Triumph Daytona 955i was totaled. |
|
| 2005.08.28 | AndreaW | Northbound on Hwy99 (aka Aurora Ave N) just by the Woodland Pk Zoo exit. Dumb cager cut me off, the rear-end of the bike came up and threw me off the bike. The Boxer Cup Replica hit me as it flipped head over heels, righted itself as I was sliding in front of it, then drove over my waist as if there was a ghost rider on it. The bike is totalled. I'll walk in a month (2 months after the accident). Friends don't let dumb friends drive! |

| 2005.07.15 | Hans | Knucklehead. I've been called that by my wife. This time she was right, I was a knucklehead. I rode up from San Antonio and met my best friend in Memphis. We were going to do the Smoky Mountain/Blue Ridge Parkway/Shenandoah NP ride. What a great ride, but I digress. My friend and I are in our mid 50s and both have almost 40 years of riding experience each. I've always felt superior to my friend because I've never dumped on pavement. Over the years, he has had several mishaps, none serious. I didn't appreciate it at the time, but this accident was the best motorcycling experience that ever happened to me. We were riding back to Memphis through West Virginia and Kentucky where we were to go our our separate ways. We stayed overnight in a beautiful state park in WV. The next moring the park ranger (who was also a motorcyclist) told us about a road that lead to a fire tower where we could get an excellent view of WV countryside. The turn-off road had no sign, but just turn right at the post office. I was leading, going about 35 when I crested a hill and there was the post office. I was going too fast to safely make the turn, but like a knucklehead I breaked hard. The intersection was covered in the pea-size gravel. I went down so fast that I never even touched my hands or arms to the ground. I landed on my right side and would later have a large beautiful purple butt cheek. No broken bones and just scratches on my brand-new Kawasaki Concours. I had 37 years of riding experience and I had pulled a knucklehead. All I had to do was go pass the intersection and turn around. Before, I felt invincible with my 37 years of riding experience, now I knew I was not. When I got home my son offered to buff out the scratches on my new bike. I told him to leave them. I needed to be reminded once in awhile that even I could do something stupid. Was this a serious accident? No, but I think I learned a valuable lesson. Stop feeling so sanctimonous and realize that anyone could make a split moment decision leading to knuckleheadness. I'm going to do my best not to repeat. |

|
| 2005.06.03 | Brad | I was riding a 2000 SV 650, naked sport bike on a stretch of two lane highway just north of San Luis Obispo, CA. I'd been riding on all sorts of roads for the majority of the afternoon, and I was heading home. It was hot, I was tired. The sun, on my left, was flickering ceaselessly through the tall Eucalyptus trees. The flickering was sort of hypnotizing me, lulling me. I was cruising at about 60 into a fairly shallow sweeping right. I got into the turn a little late, being in my hot, tired, lethargic kind of mood, and so I was drifting toward the left side of my lane, almost riding on the double yellow lines. That's when the truck coming the other way swung around the turn. I knew I was too close to the center, and, instead of easing the throttle and leaning into the turn, I panicked and hit the brakes. I heard the sound of tires skidding, and before I knew what was happening, I was tumbling across the asphalt. My first thought was that I'd hit the back of the truck; my second thought was that I must have broken any number of bones. Turned out neither was the case. I had a badly sprained right foot, road rash all over my legs and arms. The corners of my palms were deeply cut and cauterized, but the worst of it was my right knee. I think the knee was the first point of impact. It was ground down almost to the bone, covering pretty much the entire area of my knee cap. Disgusting. Fortunately, the guy in the truck had stopped to see if I was OK. He helped me pick the bike up, and he took me to the urgent care clinic back in town. I remember feeling like I might vomit during that drive back. I was out of commission for about two weeks, and the knee didn't fully heal for about a year. Still left with a purple scar covering my knee cap.
When I went back with my brother the next day to pick the bike up and take it home, I noticed the entirety of my skid marks were across the plastic, yellow painted double lines that divide the lanes.
Fortunately, the bike's damage was relatively minimal. New foot peg, turn signal on the right side; had a machine shop tweak the handle bars back into shape.
What did I learn from this ordeal? Aside from thanking whomever might be watching over me that there had been no other car behind the truck I crashed to avoid (b/c that car would have run right over me), I learned to recognize that state of mind when I'm riding. That tired, lazy feeling can lead directly to disaster. These days, I take rests, and I don't push myself when I know my body and mind are growing weary. I came through it all right, but I'd be happy as hell to never go through it again! |

| 2005.04.01 | code of arms | my ex boyfriend got an 05 yamaha warrior. we took that beautiful bike out every chance we got. about 3 months later, he's going on a solo ride and a soccer mom turns left right in front of him, no choice but to lay the bike down. slid right into her front tire, twisted the wheel and the frame of the bike. a little bit of road rash for the rider, but the bike was totaled. soccer mom had lame insurance and the brand new bike was toast, only got $5,000 back for it. no more rides since then. - hey does anyone have some disturbing exrays of broken bones? im starting up a clothing company for riders that will hopefully be different than what is already out there. if anyone wants to see their mangled bones immortalized, im trying to collect some exrays for design purposes. email if your interested shastahanson@yahoo.com |

| 2004.10.12 | Rufus | New rider... Put bike in first gear started off slow, for some unknown reason bike lurched to high speed. I accidently grabbed the front brake and almost went over the bike. The bike began to wobble and I went down at about 20 mph and slid for about 3 feet. It was not raining weather was nice it was about 7:30 pm. And EVERY neighbor was outside watching. INJURIES: Severe road rash to arm, shoulder and knee. Huge bruise on stomach from handle bars. Not wearing helmet or leather. I will learn for next time. Only damage to bike is broken Headlight. Bike is a Honda cm200t |

| 2004.08.27 | Giovanni | Riding to work in the middle lane of a 3-lane road with my BMW F650, beautiful sunny day of a South CA summer. An idiot in the rightmost lane tries to turn right and then changes his mind and steers left into the middle lane. I was (at least) 60mph since the road goes slightly downhill in that section; I didn't even have the time to brake. Hit his honda civic from behind at full speed, rolled over the roof, then front hood and finally face down on the asphalt. As soon as I hit the asphalt I run in the direction of the curb to avoid other cars. Asphalt rash on both my hands (no gloves :) ) and a couple of bruises here and there. A piece of glass stuck in my hand, but nothing broken. Nolan N100 flip up helmet was (thanks God!) closed AND locked. I would be faceless otherwise. As I sit on the curb I see lots of blood everywhere and I would like to scream for the excruciating pain in both hands, but I laugh at the thought of how lucky I had been. The comment of the nurse loading me in the ambulance: This is not the first time, isn't it? :) On the ambulance I ask the nurse to check if the laptop in my backpack boots (no chance) and if the cell is working (yes!) and I make a couple of calls. Both car and motorcycle were totalled. With the money from the insurance I've bought a XR650L.

| 2004.07.25 | black wackler | Damn college towns. My first and only wreck to date is the nightmare of all bikers. It was a great evening. I was stopped at a light, when it changed, I started of, but my bike stalled because I was low on gas. I stopped in the right lane, no shoulder, switched to my reserve tank, and just as I was starting back up it happened. I only remember spinning. A car slammed me from the back right. I came around to a very scared face over me. The people that hit me had veered back onto the road and kept on going. Fortunately for me this guy had seen me get hit, and stopped. Probably kept me from getting completely run over by a truck. When I came around again, it was to a familiar face. An old friend that was a fireman. He let me know that I was hurt pretty bad. I could have told him that, but I didn't really know how bad it was. I came to again in the hospital. I was pretty drugged up, but they told me how bad it was. The impact had pushed my calf over my peg. Pushed the peg through my calf actually. My leg was almost completely severed already, and the rest of the bone had been crushed. Anyone thats been there can tell you that its hard to recover from a broken leg. The cast, the pain, the time it takes to heal. Now imagine having to give someone permission to remove a limb. No cast. No chance that it will ever be healed. I will spend the rest of my life without my leg. Thats a harsh reality for an extremely active 21 year old. The pain is still there though. Phantom pain. For some it never lessens. Its been 6 weeks now and have gone through 3 surgeries. The only thing that I want to do is go ride. But I cant do that either, not until I get a new leg. And even after that, I dont have the money to repair my bike. If its all a dream, I hope to wake up soon. I know its not a dream though. In my dreams I still have two legs. |

| 2004.07.07 | RoadKing | Bike: 2003 Road King Classic
Experience: I had been riding 2 months at this point and did an 1800 mi trip to Knoxville TN and back the previous week which included riding in the rain between Gatlinburg and Knoxville with no problems.
Date: 7/7/04
TOD: 8:00 pm
Pavement: Wet. It had been raining earlier but had stopped about a half hour prior.
Cost to restore bike: $6700.
On the way back home from a dealership dinner ride, I was a mile from home I had been riding on the crowned portion of the road and was beginning to change over to a left turn lane. The stop light ahead came on and I tapped my brakes and the rear tire locked and started move to toward the right. I let go and regained control. I slowly applied pressure to the brakes again and the rear brake locked and this time the bike went down (at 20-25mph) on the left side. I was wearing my H-D Denim Jacket and helmet. I must have went down perfectly because I sustained no injury to myself except some road rash on the elbows INSIDE the jacket. My bike continued traveling on its left side for a few more yards and then the shift lever caught something in the road (maybe a man hole cover) which then flipped the bike on its other side and continued sliding. Altogether it slid about 30-35 feet and I was just glad it came to rest on its ownand did not strike the car in front of it. After 3 different inspections by the ins company I finally got my bike back 7 weeks later. |

| 2004.07.06 | Gary Wasserman | It was a lovely Tuesday morning. The four of us, Pete Moss, Deb Wasserman, Marc Wasserman and and your humble scribe headed off from the 2004 Gather at Daroga St. Pk. to see the Grand Coulee Dam. About 2/3 of the way there we were rolling along just fine; Deb in the lead on her Seca II, Marc and me on the Road Glide, and Pete on his Wing. Deb saw a gas station on the right and so did I, but seeing as how we'd only gone 80 miles from the last fill-up I somehow concluded that Deb wouldn't stop. Well, you know how you see what you expect. Darn if she wasn't stopped in front of me! I tried to stop but it was too late. I ran into the rear of the Seca II demolishing her bike (the Road Glide's right front brake rotor sliced open the back of her left muffler fer god's sake) and ripping up the right side of the Glide and throwing us all to the ground. Pete avoided the mess and was able to phone back to Daroga to arrange transportation. Meantime a cop sitting at the intersection (actually in the gas station according to Deb) called an ambulance. Next thing I knew I was sitting in the back of the ambulance answering stupid questions like "what day is today?" and "do you know who you are?". OK, I had a little trouble answering at first. In fact I remember nothing after hitting my brakes. Fortunately Deb escaped with a bruise on her left hip and a scrape. Marc had a scrape on his knee and his elbow. Me, well I was another story. Minor concussion. Two broken ribs on the right rear side. Multiple contusions on my legs including a big hematoma, bruises all across my back and shoulders. My jacket was abraded from the front right all the way around the shoulders down to the left arm (torn). My helmet was impacted in about a 270 degree arc. In fact all three of our helmets were damaged and had to be trashed. My wristwatch, on my left wrist, was worn down about an 1/8th of an inch (all Titanium watch). Marc's jacket self-destructed protecting him. Deb emerged with almost no clothing damage. She was the only one wearing leather pants. Duh. Here it is 2004.08.04 and I'm still not recovered. Ribs still aching, back sore, legs swollen and hematoma (since drained) still healing. Lessons learned: 1) always folow-up on any prediction you make while riding. 2) always wear protective armored pants and jackets. 3) good helmets are worth a lot more than you pay for them 4) friends (especially friends with cell phones and pickups) are invaluable and worth their weight in gold. I couldn't have asked for a more supportive group than the WL folks at the Gather. The Glide will be in the shop until late August at least (100th anniversary painted parts take extra long). Meantime Deb took her insurance money and bought a '02 SV650S just like my old one. She likes it. |

| 2004.06.08 | Jeremiah | What happened? A drunk driver (very drunk) turned into me on my 71' r75/5. Now me and my bike both have ater market parts... |
|
| 2004.05.15 | BigBoy | For some strange reason my bike didn't want to turn and I seen the curb coming at me really fast so I hit the brakes and the bike stood straight up and I rode it out. I was going 50 mph and the bike did a flip and landed 30 meters from the curb and I did two flips landed on my head (thank God I was wearing my helmet) then slid down the embankment. I'm a little sore but I will be ok. By the way I am lookin for all new plastics for my 1995 Yamaha FZR 600 and a front brake lever. Please email me at jschedule@hot.rr.com If you Know anything. |
|
| 2004.05.03 | Rob K. | I'm making a right turn at a 4-way intersection, 50 yds away is a traffic light for the expressway and I need to make a left there, so I'm swinging wide for the proper lanes. As I accelerate, a p/u is making a left turn from the opposite side of the intersection, not even looking at me. I add throttle to avoid him, end up swinging wider, and now I'm lined up on the curbing between opposing lanes. Ride up/over the ramped curb, reflector stick knocks handlebars sideways from direction of travel, ride off other side of curb and misaligned bike & I fall on the left side. The engine drove my left leg into the curb, breaking a small section of bone off my left femur by the knee, cycle slides out of my grip damaging tendons on right thumb. Cycle has damaged turn signals, needs new headlight mount, and scrapes on left side, but is otherwise functioning after this 15 mph crash. |

| 2004.04.11 | happy go lucky | beautiful sunny sunday afternoon. Riding my cbr929 on one of my favourite country roads. left hand 120 deg turn made blind as the approach is an incline. I approach at 60mph as i have done many times before. This time, a voice in the back of my head tells me I'm too fast. I hit the brakes, end up locking rear wheel. I end up going straight through the middle of the turn, rear wheel locked and gliding all the time. Out of the corner of my eye, I see the guardrail. The same voice that told me to brake, now says 'oh shit'. The moment the bike hits the gravel on the side of the road, it starts sliding, stopping inches short of the guardrail. I end up few feet in front of it. I look at the bike 1st then get up and check myself. bike: cracked front and middle fairing, bent shifter; the frame slider really helped. The cosmetic damage hardly noticible. me: practically untouched. jacket and gloves took it all. helmet was untouched too. pretty amazing !! guess the braking must have slowed me down to under 30mph. 1st time I fell on this bike and a long long time since my last fall. In retrospect it was quite an exhilarating experience, though don't plan to do it any time soon :) |

| 2004.04.02 | G-Dog | What happened?
Irony at its finest. Heading to the dealership to pick up a new helmet, I pull up to a stoplight on my 100th Ann. V-Rod. Pulled up behind a box van just like your supposed to; on the far left side leaving enough space between me and the van so that I could see the driver's mirror (and the driver). We were in the middle lane, and had been stopped for a bit waiting for the light to change, when the driver of the box van decided he needed to change lanes. The way he chose to do this was to put the truck in reverse and try to get back as quickly as possible before the light changed. He just forgot one small detail, however, and that was to look in his mirror before he hit reverse. You can imagine the rest. Here I am, being stubborn, thinking I can hold up my V-Rod as this box van backs into me, only to have the bike twisted violently to the right, which pitched me off of it (and down pretty hard on the old right knee). I then roll a couple of times and look back to see this van pushing my bike across the payment for about 5-6 feet before van and bike stopped. The driver of the van and I then had words. This is of course not the only bike wreck I've had, but I thought it fairly bizarre and worthy of sharing. Rubber down folks. |

| 2004.02.13 | Sparky | i luked away from the road 4 2 seconds + wen i luked round the boy in front had stopped,so stupid me put on da front brakes and the bike went from below me. |

| 2004.02.10 | Ditch Diver | Too much alcohol, too dark a night, too slick a grass, not enough experience on unfamiliar bike. lost right mirror and mount upon entering ditch on right side prone position, lost good winter gloves while digging under bike for ignition switch to turn off headlite which was shining down road. Slight damage to ankle while removing leg from under bike.

| 2004.02.07 | tedder | What happened? Brand-new Suzuki DL650 (28 miles!). A Suzuki SUV decided to change lanes without bothering to look over her shoulder. Bike was totalled, I didn't have any major injuries. |
|
| 2004.01.07 | Medic27 | What happened? i had just stopped at the local hospital to check on my dad. He had a heart attack earlier in the week. Weather looked bad north of me. But had to go to work, started out no problems till i got to town. Started raining stopped my 04 harley ultra classic and put on my rain coat. Well raining harder, stopped under a marathon gas station awning. While waiting the storm out a red neck weather watcher cames running over says "man there is a bigger storm coming with hail". So i thought i know of a car wash down the road a little ways. I will go there and pull in set out the storm and call work going to be late. Well started out in rain, tree limbs every where water running down the hill. I started down the hill, bike hydro planes off the road. See a guide wire and a bill board post ahead of me. I managed to go between, but dropped over the grass hill and back end passed the front threw me off. Slid in mud on my back. Took inventory on myself. Hit my nose but no broken bones. Did 1063.00 in damage but no major damage to motor or functions. |

| 2004.01.01 | RZ-250 from hell | Overtaking at top speed during peak hour on my old learner bike RZ250, headed into the tunnel of the Cahill Freeway in Sydney. Forgot that there was a sharper then expected bend in the tunnel before a 270 degree sweeping left hander which leads up onto the Sydney Harbour Bridge. To make matters worse I was in the right hand land with a right hand bend in front of me. Options were lay it down ASAP or ride straight into a tunnel wall. Quickly choose to lay the bike down however go hi-sided in the process and landed face first back down on top of the bike, remember vividly thinking whilst I was sliding sideways for about 20mtrs how close the 4x4 was that I was over taking, I turned my head and saw that it was that close I could see all of the trailing car behind it from looking under the 4x4, damn to close, thought I might get unlucky here and get run over. Anyway, results the 4x4 stopped in time, I picked my buised and battered body up of the road pavement took off my glove and saw a "pointy thing" sticking out and though oh yeah dislocated thumb no problems. Proceeded to pick the bike up jumped on but it wouldn't start, luckily. Picked the bike up with the help of the guy in the 4x4 and another biker who stopped and placed it on the guttering kurb of the tunnel and headed to hospital thanks to the driver of the 4x4 insisting. Got to the emergency ward and proceeded to pass out with another case of concussion. Woke up and was being prepared for surgery on hand as I snapped the bone in 4 places. Now my right tunmb is 1cm shorter then the left. 4 days in hospital to recover and 3 months of work. The bike cost me $200 to repair, no fairings to fix, only a new handle bars, clutch level, and indicators. |
|
| 2003.12.29 | SM | cruising in the middle lane on a flyover with one hand at 80km/h. didn't see a bump. bump actually comprises a sharp dip and a high bump.( damn road authorities can't repair them >:().started a tankslapper which worsened when i put my left hand back on the bars ( of course). shaken a dozen times before i decided to bring it down and skid. took off skin from my right hand, left arm, left shoulder and petrol ignited from the sparks burnt my stomach. knee had a chip of flesh missing. repair costs for bike $3000. |

| 2003.12.07 | Schlazzy | I was on my way to a Toys-for-Tots christmas ride in Springfield, MO on dec. 7 at 1:00 in the afternoon, perfect weather, 54 degrees.. I was riding a just bought 1998 Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 w/only 4k mi., a cherry bike. Anyhow I was stopped at a light on a four-lane plus turn lane in a fairly busy part of town. I was first at the north-bound light and as it turned green, I noticed a silver mini-van being let into the turn lane by the stopped south-bound traffic. As i accelerate through second gear, a few lengths in front of the other cars who had been at the light, the van pulls out into my lane, flooring it to beat me across . I immediately whip the bike into the right hand lane and realize then that the van inends to cross both lanes of traffic!!! As it entered the right hand lane i lock up both brakes doing @ 45 mph and start to slide....I ditched w/about 30 ft to spare and braced myself for hell. I slid the gap and smashed into the passenger door of the van at about 30-35 mph... after impact my body fell to the pavement and THE REAR TIRE OF THE VAN RAN DIRECTLY OVER MY CHEST LIKE A HUMAN SPEED BUMP, I estimate the van's speed to be 20-25 mph with no brakes, thank god! The amazing thing was that through all this I NEVER LOST CONCIOUSNESS and was able to speak to the EMT's when the ambulance arrived 15 minutes later. Total Damage: Gashes in my face requiring 20+ stitches (helmet saved severe dammage)....3rd degree road-rash burns over most of my legs and back....totally fractured left humerus(fixed with full length titanium rod).....8 BROKEN RIBS(right side)....punctured, collapsed right lung with severe internal bleeding....level 3 Aclio-clavicular shoulder seperation( torn ligaments)...AND A TOTALLED BIKE;)
I spent 13 painful days in the hospital (2 in ICU). Had a chest tube inserted to remove blood from my chest cavity (about a gallon in four days). I Had over 80 X-rays done & 2 surgeries. I also had to cough up about a cup of blood, OUCH! My morphine bill alone was $10,000.00. My total medical bills look like around $75,000.00!!!! It's been a month and change and I'm getting much better although i've lost 20 lbs, I should make a near full recovery, I hope. The bitch of it is in the police report the woman driving the van said she saw me coming and went anyway! Oh well I'm lucky to be writing this....MORAL OF MY STORY: MINIVANS F*CKING SUCK! Ride Safe! Travis |

| 2003.11.02 | Chuck and Yvonne | Enjoying one of the last nice weekends before winter's chill set-in in Myrtle Beach SC. We were riding down Hwy 17 and we were slowing for a wreck that was just up a head of us when the guy in front of me panic braked for whatever reason, I vered left to avoid him missed him and he then went left, back in front of me, no way to avoid him. I broke my rt leg in 4 places dislocated my rt shoulder, broke my lt wrist, broke my jaw in 3 places, shattered my rt check bone and had several internal injuries, my wife was a little more fortunate and only broke here rt leg. I was airlifted from the hospital in Myrtle Beach to Charleston, SC because they thought I had major head trama. We're healing very well and we're looking forward to riding again. The bike didn't cause the wreck, circunstance's did. Ride safe |

| 2003.10.? | Mr. Russell Greene | Popped a weelie in first and got that wheel up real high but on the way down i nailed some gravel that i dident see. The tire locks left and the bike (new sv650) slid out from under me. I rolled about 15ft and stopped just in time to watch my bike slide another 15ft all the while i watched the dollar signs come off it. lost the shift peg and dented the gas tank and lost my wind sheild. on the bike the next day doin weelies again
|
|
| 2003.10.31 | KG | I pulled a weelie in 2nd gear then tried to roll a stoppie afterwards and squeezed the front break too hard and went over the handlebars at about 50mph bike bike got pretty messed up but luckily it was mostly just body damage as for me just a lil road rash |

|
| 2003.10.19 | drunk-n-happy | Riding in the town of lafayette at 60 mph in city roads swerving between cars. Finally got into road rage when a car acclerated behind me. downshifted to acclerate; popped the clutch; and looked back. Forgot to acclerate this locked the rear wheel never saw the curb comming. this tossed me and the bike 7-8 feet in the air and landed in a nearby building parking lot. Every1 thought that I was dead. I just got up with some bruises, cuts, swollen arm, wounded leg, back and neck pains, a totaled bike and a smashed helmet. Even in that condition since I refused medical attention they made me do 15 mins of paperwork and charged me 105 bucks to tow my bike 2 blocks. I live to ride another day; and ride I will |
|
| 2003.10.19 | Tommy | What happened? Sunday afternoon, headed to the local MX track. track is dry and fast. i was into my fourth lap when I decided to clear the 40ftr, just about mid ramp my back tire broke traction and I lost a bit of speed. Still thinking I was fast enuff, the flight was straight and level. then I seen the dirt wall at eye level. Last word "F@#k" pancaked the front rim, bent both forks, twisted the lower tripple, crushed a brand new FMF Gnarly Gold pipe and bent my TAG 2 bars. Broke my chest protector in 3 places and cracked my BELL. Fractured sternum, bruised ribs, sprained wrist. OUCH!!!! |
|
| 2003.10.19 | Gravel Gertie | What happened? Well, I'm a 45-year-old mother of two teenage sons, a two-time cancer survivor. During my last bout of surgery I decided that I would take the motorcycle safety foundation course. I did, completed it, got my license and have been looking for a bike for 6 months. I finally got a barely used Honda Shadow 600 Deluxe--lots of shiney chrome. For two days I took the bike out in unpopulated areas. On day two I rode through some awesome farm roads--really got the feel of the clutch--was upshifting/downshifting like nobody's business. Really feeling GREAT! Then, I turned down a road with fresh gravel strewn over the asphalt. I vaguely remember thinking: "I hope this won't be a problem." No sooner had I completed the thought, BOOM I was down. Had the wind knocked out of me and my right leg was HURTING! I crawled out from under the bike, ripped my helmet off to try to catch my breath. A guy in a Porsche stopped. I called my husband. The guy and I uprighted my bike and moved it off the road. Yadda, yadda, yadda: road rash on my right arm, stitches in my right swollen knee. Sore neck, shoulders, chest. The bike just needs the handle bars straightened. I'm retired 'til Spring. Then I'm starting over. Ouch!
Update: Had to let others know. I DIDN'T wait til next Spring. Hopped right back up on the urban horse and am LOVING it post crash and all. Peace! |

| 2003.10.14 | EAC One | Flipping a u-turn in a truck stop parking lot, I've got my EX-500 laid down enough for my shoe toe to touch the parking lot when I hit a hole in the pavement filled with sand and gravel. Lowsided into a 15 yard roll through the gravel, bike slid to a stop 5 yards further. Fairings busted to hell; minor road rash and bruises for me. Didn't even scratch my helmet. |
|
| 2003.10.12 | EAC One | 200 miles into a 1000 mile road trip, I get on my bike and start it without the clutch handle in. Forgot I parked it in first gear. Bike jumped out from under me, I'm left standing there feeling stupid; my bike promptly falls left and snaps my clutch handle. Drive remaining 800 miles with a crescent wrench tied to my wrist as a surrogate clutch handle. |
|
| 2003.10.09 | MrWho | 88 year old man in a Cady, pulled out in front of me. Stated he didn't even see me. DIDN"T SEE ME???? If he couldn't see me, why didn't he see the 15+ cars behind me? You see I was the 1st in the right lane at a red light. The light had changed and the 'rush-hour' trafic was moving together! Speed was 30-40mph, hit breaks, the laid down bike. Bike slid 30ft before hitting back end of caddy! Couldn't see me! Maybe it due to poor eye sight? 88 and still on road!! Bike is bad shape, however just small 1/2 dollar size road burn on knee and elbow. Although the jeans don't have holes I still for road burn. No marks on helmit at all!! Anyway, life is good, I'm alive and ready to ride! |
|
| 2003.10.06 | TonyT | I just bought and installed a new pro circuit pipe and silencer for the good old 92'CR250. Not knowing that the pipe would make the bike FAST AS HELL, i'm ripping in 3rd gear down the edge of a farm field, when I hit 4th gear powerband to ride my usual wheelie, when the bike goes completly vertical. Not wanting to be a puss and lift I ride it out as long as I can and when I went to land it, not knowing, I was headed straight for a sticker bush at about 50+MPH. Even though I had my helmet and goggles on, the force was so great that the stickerbush ripped right through my nose and through my left shoulder/arm. I was bleeding so bad it looked like a red water fountain =) It did not hurt my pride one bit. I stuck a paper towel on my nose, started my bike, ripped a 180 turn around and ripped another wheelie on the way back =) Ride or Die. |
|
| 2003.09.30 | Brad | What happened? Riding to work in the am 45 mph clear no traffic at all, coming on a parking lot about 100 yds ahead i notice a white van pulling out slowly as i close in on it 60yds it is slowing. Closer still and i think i may have to ditch into the parking lot. There is no traffic an no reason for the slow entry. Then i am 30 ft and turning to ditch into lot the van stops. Do i head on or lay it down? I jam brakes an lay over hitting my left side on the drivers side of the van and the bike lays on top of me on my right side. Mentally go over myself and im in one piece and enraged at this driver. I look up as I am under the drivers window, whos face do I see. MY WIFE!!!! I cant yell scream and all that, she has burst into tears. A crowd forms, rescue comes takes me away. We can laugh now, couldnt then. My K75 is fixable my knees still hurt elbows lock up but I will be on the road soon. Lesson learned, call the wife at work and make sure she is not on the road before leaving home!!!! |
|
| 2003.09.25 | Seth LaForge | V-Strom fell over while wheelying. Damage to self: slight road-rash on elbow. Aerostich Roadcrafter prevented further damage, and was basically undamaged. Damage to bike: holed case, damaged radiator, broken footpeg, destroyed brake lever, and body rash. |

| 2003.08.27 | Desmodue | Day started partly cloudy, 3 of us out for spirited backroad riding. Caught up to a rain shower and we slowed down to about 45-50 mph. I was in the lead when I entered a slight downhill, easy right-hander. The front tire suddenly lost traction on the wet pavement, crossing up the handlebars. When the tire caught it bucked me up and off. Bike went down on left side. I crashed to the pavement and suffered compression fractures to both wrists. Required pins and external fixators to fix. Shoei helmet, Joe Rocket Reactor jacket, Firstgear gloves all worked great. Levi's did not. '99 Ducati 900ss is being repaired, nothing but cosmetics. Back on the stallion by spring. Would be sooner, but still in rehab. |

| 2003.08.15 | Jboy | Beth's Favorite Road, ~80 miles NW of the GPNDG site at Lake Crescent, OR. Riding along the windy road, over a rise and into a section of new, very wet pavement. Locked the rear, slid sideways, road curved to the left out from under me. Bike dropped straight down into the v-shaped ditch between the edge of the road and the guardrail. I never hit the ground, was left standing there. Destroyed the carbon end-can, dented the s-bend collector, cracked the fairing on both sides of the bike. Broke third metatarsal in right foot. Rode the bike back to camp, then ~400 miles home to Seattle two days later. Six weeks of healing, and back on the road. |

| 2003.08.10 | Carl Paukstis and sister Karen Paukstis | Coming home from Bellingham, eastbound on US2 in nasty rain, in loose traffic approaching an unmarked intersection at the crest of a rise, just east of Startup, WA. The Van 2nd in front of me was preparing to turn left and the Isuzu 1st in front of me was going to go around him to the right, and I was going to follow. But the van changed hs mind and decided to turn right, the Isuzu swerved right and braked hard. I braked hard - too hard on the rear ME880. Back end came around to the right, I tried to save it, but went down lowside to the left and about 20mph; slid maybe 10 yards. Both aforementioned drivers stopped, helped pick up the bike and get it out of the road and made sure we were OK. Trivial, cosmetic damage to persons and property. Analysis: I was following too close for conditions - not for long, but allowed it to get too close while impatient for idiot in van to figure out what he was going to do. I braked too hard on the back - might have been able to stop on front alone; certainly would have had room on dry pavement. |

| 2003.07.28 | Crashee: Bubba Crasher: Me | After 21 years of riding, and 4 different motorcycles, I went down. But I went down easy, it was relatively minor. No major damage to flesh or metal. Bad thing was I ran into my best friend. That's a real pisser. And it was all my fault. Remember: inatttention to the geography in the direction of travel can be hazardous to everyone involved.
Bubba and I were helping with a fundraising bicycle event. As motorcylcists, we helped to provide assistance to the bicycle riders in the event. It was approximately 6am on a bright, clear, cold, beautiful, sierra morning. We were riding along the course at approximately 40mph, Bubba riding lead, me trailing along fat, dumb and happy. I was enjoying the sunrise off to my left, when I should have been enjoying the southend view of Bubba's scooter. I turned my head back forward in time to see that Bubba had done gone and slowed down to check out a cyclist on the left side of the road. I meshed with the right side of his bike. Don't remember how I came off my bike, but I did find myself on my back, sliding feet first down the road. I clearly remember watching my scooter sliding down the road in front of me sending up a storm of sparks. My bike and I ended up off the road. I got up and looked behind me to see Bubba laying in the middle of the right lane and rolling towards the right shoulder (He was intent on getting off the road). I helped him get off the road. We got him packed off to the hospital, and made arrangements for our bikes. Bubba's scoot had some cosmetic damage to windscreen and bags. It was ridable. My handle bars were bent good. Had a broken shifter and some other cosmetic damage. It was not ridable. Both scooters got put in the back of a pickem up truck and taken home.
Okay, so Bubba was older and he didn't bounce so well when he fell. He Got checked out at the hospital and released with bruised and battered right should and neck. Banged up hip and back. We figure that my left handlebar handle probably wacked him pretty good (Ape hangers are about shoulder high). He was wearing a Johnny Rocket jacket. No road rash. jacket in good shape. I was still young then and bounced pretty good, walked away with a sore ass. Tore up my riding suit. No road rash.
After this incident I was designated the permanant Road Captan, no one in the club wanted to ride in front of me :-) They all wanted me to ride up front so they could keep an eye on me.
Bubba was riding a BMW, GSsomething. This was the second accident he had been involved in on this particular bike in as many months. After his third accident on the same bike a while later, we convinced him it was the bike and he should get rid of it. He did. Hasn't been in an accident since.

| 2003.07.26 | RoadKill | Driving north on 4 lane highway with N/S lanes divided by grassy island. Speed 70 mph in the far right north bound lane. Old lady on the west side of highway pulls out of parking lot heading east across both southbound lanes, bouncing thru the island median and makes a left turn north hitting me in the rear. Remember, I'm doing 70 mph! Never saw her coming as I was in a right hand curve at the time she hit me. I was wathcing for traffic from the right entering the highway. Knocked the bike down, broke four ribs, tore right foot almost off twisting it 180 degrees. Slid over 185 feet down the highway. Old lady pulls up and says "I seed em in da cuv but I thoughts I cud beats em to da dolla sto!" 3 days ICU, $35,000 and she's carrying $20,000 insurance policy, 75 years old and wearing coke bottle bottoms for glasses. |

| 2003.07.21 | DangDee | This happened the very day I brought home my new-to-me GS500E "Strawberry". First, I tried to unload it by myself and nearly dumped it at the bottom of the ramp. Saved it! Whew! Gotta go to the gym! Returned the trailer to UHaul then put on my gear for a nice ride on the new mount. Gonna go surprise Paul. Turned two corners - man this bike turns great! - stopped at the usual stop sign, put my foot down on the right... whoa! The ground's farther down than on the Ninjette... Whoa! Hey, the pavement is "contoured" here... whoa! The bike's leaning too far... WHOA! AAAAAAAAAaaaaaaah! In short, wimpy-arms dropped it in an ultra-slow-motion nightmare. This wild-looking old lady came running out of her house barefoot, wearing only a mu-mu, to try to pick up the bike for me! Nice, but her toes were sure to get munched! No real damage to the bike or rider, but broke off the flippin' brake lever and ego MAJORLY bruised! Picked up the bike in front of the gathering neighbors and rode it back home with only the rear brake to stop. New red bike in the garage, can't ride until I mail order a lever, and everyone at work is asking about it... blush! |
|
| 2003.07.16 | Slowpoke Ken | Turning right in Milwaukie, OR, hit some oil with the front tire and low-sided. The crash bars and alluminum saddle boxes kept my GL-500 from suffering any damage, and my leather coat, Gierke pants, boots and gloves protected me well. I had a little 'rug burn' on my right arm, tore the tip of my little finger and wrenched my right shoulder a little. |
|
| 2003.07.09 | Sparky | So I pick up my brand new 2003 gixxer 750 on a tuesday night. The next day I go to work and its all that I could think about. So I get home, get changed and get ready to ride. I wheel her out of the garage and fire her up. (Man that thing sounded sweet.) I go and grab my helmet and just as I turn around I see it start to roll. Oh Shit! Since I was about 10 feet away I couldnt get there in time and you guessed it, WHAM!!! down on its left side. So I run over and with a feat of superhuman strength (the kind that only a mother lifting a car to get her baby could muster) I pick her up. Unbelievable, 1 day old and I just crushed my tank, took off a mirror, scratched my faring, etc., etc., etc., So I immediately take her to the dealer for emergency surgery. The head mechanic came out looked at her and said "yup, thats gonna cost you about $1,900 with parts and labor. But wait, thats not the worst part, he then tells me its gonna be 2 weeks till I get her back. The $1,900 sucks but 2 weeks without her is hell.
So the lesson here is-- dont be a dumb ass like me and park your bike where it could fall. It was an expensive lesson to learn. |

| 2003.06.07 | Alex | What happened?
Woods/trail riding on Honda CR500R. Me and buddy found NICE jump. Hit the power-band coming off the peak in 2nd, rear wheel spit sideways, I bounced then went down hard on left side. Bike unaffected, me with 2 cracked ribs and tweaked left knee, and bruises. |

|
| 2003.04.26 | Bronze | Pretty damn lucky, overall. I don't remember much about the crash, took a heavy smack to the noggin (concussion). From what I'm gathering from witnesses, etc., the rider in front of me came around a corner and tried to avoid deer in the road. I came around and tried to avoid everything in the road. I managed to do that, but wound up also avoiding *the road*. I got airlifted from the bottom of a 30-40ft rock embankment to the hospital. Banged up really good, but luckily nothing broken. All my riding gear is trashed, WEAR GOOD STUFF, it's worth it. I would have been maimed or severly killed without it. Oh, the bike? Still haven't heard from the insurance adjuster yet, hopefully not totalled. I wish I could remember what happened, but bottom line, I should have been able to keep in on the road if I didn't hit anything. Immediately after the accident, I thought I had hit the other bike, but found out I didn't. Don't stay locked in Holy Shit! mode, it ain't over 'til you're stop. |
|
| 2003.04.13 | Denzler | At end of straightaway at Pacific Raceways, RZ500 rapidly lost coolant, engine siezed, rider down at about 120 mph. First crash due to mechanical failure in 24 years of roadracing. Moral: Shit Happens, Eventually, No Matter What. |
|
| 2003.04.01 | Rob K. | Coming home from a cheap shopping trip ( if it won't fit in the backpack, I don't need it ), I was making a slow left turn in front of my fire station 1 block from home. A cage was a bit far left of normal lane placement, which made me swing a bit wide. Normally not a problem; BUT -city streetsweeper, picking up most of a winters sanding refuse, left a small patch of gravel after 3 F***ING PASSES! Hit said gravel, front wheel slid out, dumping me and bike on left side. Physical injury- Me: bruises on left shoulder, elbow, knee, deep hip bruise making walking difficult for a couple days. Bike: severly bent shifter, stressed clutch cable that broke at handle later. Mental injury from fellow firemen giving me abuse for low siding in front of station (bastids =) ) |

| 2002.11.30 | JUMPOUTBOY | What happened?Got bran-new GSXR for wife on birthday two weeks prior. With only 150 miles on OD, learned the importance of warming up tires on an ice cold day! In a hurry to get home from work at 1:00 am, made a smooth right out of parking lot, shifted into second, full throttle and came off clutch. Just say back tire was moving but I wasn't. Bike began drifting to left, back tire caught, and I was eyeing cement. Walked away with a sevearly crushed wrist (just hanging there). Trip to the ER by ambulance with a five night stay in the hospital. F@@cked up right wrist for the rest of my life, and a hell of a lot of medical bills. Good note, bike only suffered minor cosmetic damage. Still riding and loving it. |

| 2002.09.08 | JC | After spending the remainder of Friday taping and wiring up bodywork, and straightening things, I qualify for the main on Saturday. Sunday I get a good start and follow the lead pack around. In the draft on the back straight, I get into turn 7 faster than ever before. I run over the curb in 8 and lose it on the gas, sliding forever into the grass. Bike tumbles, breaking rear wheel and destroying bodywork. I watch the rest of the race from the corner station. Only bumps and bruises for me. |

| 2002.07.25 | Shadow Bloke | One new Ride on lawnmower with large metal bar for front bumper. One shed, full of junk little space. One Honda Shadow. Two Honda Magna's (contributing to lack of space). Aforementioned lack of space, combined with aforementioned lawnmower and aforementioned Shadow = One dented exhaust pipe and one undamaged lawnmower. And much laughter. |

| 2002.07.18 | FCT | Got to play bumper tag with a new Chevy Tahoe who reallllly wanted into my lane. Results - beloved old F2 - crushed, me - got to meet more emergency personal, and got to take solice in the knowledge that I destroyed her freaking mirror ^_^ |
|
| 2002.06.18 | Dirty Harry + Brenda | We're home, stiff and sore, but basically ok.
The bagger will need new right engine guards, saddlebag, tour-pak, both fairing pieces, mirror, grips, handlebars, both throttle cables, front and rear floorboards, highway pegs, muffler, and several pieces of heat shield at first glance. I can get her on the road while waiting for the painted parts by doing the mirror, grips, handlebars, both throttle cables, rear floorboard if I can get the insurance company to agree.
The sequence of events was that we were doing something over 70 southbound on I5 in the HOV lane just before the 112th Street overpass in Everett Washington. The rear got squirrelly, and I thought, "shit, got a flat". Went from there rabidly through 3 or 4 oscillations which took the rear to between 45 and 90 degrees of the direction of travel. As I was counter steering through those, I was also trying to scrub off speed with the front brake. Either the tire bead broke and we touched the rim or the tire jammed the swing arm, and we were violently thrown down on our right side. Both our right legs were caught under the bike and we rotated through 540 degrees while sliding three lanes to the right for several hundred feet on I5, in heavy traffic. God was looking out for us, and it was not time for us to die, but we both did have an "oh shit" moment, as we slid across the front of an 18 wheeler, which was sliding much faster than us and closing, as we then changed lanes yet again, and stopped. It is amazing how clear the "slowed time" effect is for both of us, and how long those few seconds seemed to take.
Huge thanks to the unknown trucker who managed to avoid playing "squash" with us, Washington State Trooper Sean O'Connell, who is a motorcyclist, stayed long beyond where he had to, showed me pictures of his bike, and generally went way beyond the call of duty. Brenda says her faith in people was restored by the large number of people who stopped to make sure we were ok, and to see if they could help, (including a fellow who burned his hand on the exhaust helping me pick the bike up and move it over to the side of the road. Thanks also to the EMTs and ER folks who took care of Brenda.
The final and biggest thanks go to dp and Big Red, who were there for us in more ways than I can say. Thanks, and we owe you big!
In retrospect, we are grateful that we were wearing the gear we were. Brenda's jacket and chaps are well scuffed, but she's not. My Draggin Jeans wore through the denim layer, but not the Kevlar. My Kevlar shirt protected me very well, except for a spot on my right elbow where the Kevlar burned right through from friction, and left me with a couple of small spots of minor road rash.

| 2002.06.10 | Jim | What happened? Last day of vacation decided to take my XS1100 for a ride. Coming around a long left sweeper doing about 60. See oncoming van with left blinker on. Get off gas and tell bitch "don't you dare!!" She dosen't listen. Hard on brakes trying not to lock up while still in turn. See that I'm not gonna make it. Lock up the last 20ft hit van just behind rear tire. Helmet grazes back corner of the van as I'm thrown over the handlebars and land on my feet. (Don't ask me how I managed that!!) Two very sprained wrists, and fractured bone in left hand. Front end of bike was toast. Insurance totaled bike. I have since rebuilt it and logged over 7k miles and counting. |
|
| 2002.04.26 | Ricky | Paniced in a corner, eased into the front brake. Front end slid out before I eased off the front brake, bike and I went over a cliff, and bike ended up in a river. More Details |

| 2002.04.20 | Shadow One | Comming around a left hander I felt myself going wide and took my eyes from the exit of the corner, hit the white line and loft the front end. Hit a mountain side at about 40 MPH. |
|
| 2002.04.12 | JC | In the new racer clinic at Pacific Raceways, I highsided a borrowed SV650 racebike in the rain in turn 5. All of my gear performed admirably; I walked away with a sore knee. The bike was ugly, but not destroyed. |

| 2002.03.07 | Henry | Just finished a great week of CCS races at Daytona, Finishing 7th. in both classes I raced. Some friends came to town and asked me to ride with them the next night, so made the VTR street legal and rode with them all night. We were pulling in to our last stop, a quick little left, about 30 MPH, I got on the gas a little too hard and went through some unseen sand, wham, it highsided. The bike landed on top of me and I was entangled with it. They got me out from under it while I was still unconcious. I woke up and they called a friend to pic it up and take me to the hospital. They took exrays and said I had a broken Clavical. Dr. had to plate it and 7 screws. It's July 25th., and I'm still in Therapy and still can't work or ride {good enough to race.} Therapist asked me if I had an Attorney, OH NO! I just want my arm back. It's safer on the race track.

| 2002.02.20 | Shadow Pilot | What happened? Kneesliders and a Shadow (125)? One would have never thought! Came to a round-about a bit hard, tried to get the bike to lean too far left, lost the back end, idiot pilot decides front brake is a good plan (where did that come from?) -and theres more- front wheel locks up on loose gravel on the outside edge of the road, hit kerb on the right, bike straightens up, drops right, bending the one off, v-expensive handlebars, a foot peg, scratched up exhaust, twisted front forks a sore ankle and a bruised leg. One extremely sore ego. |
|
| 2002.01.26 | D (witness) | Just a little heads-up to all you lanesplitters out there. I won't forget this anytime soon, and the rider gets no sympathy from me. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.
Bumper-to-bumper traffic, typical rush hour. I'm staring in the rear-view waiting for traffic to move. Rider on a crotch-rocket Suzuki comes zipping up the lanes. No helmet. Saw him long before I heard him. Easily doing 35-45. As he zip by thought goes through my head "That ***hole's gonna get himself killed".
He nips around the bend ahead that curves to the right and drops. I hear two impacts. Pull my car over the curb onto the side of the road, grab my cellphone and start running.
Lots of people getting out of their cars with their hands over their mouths. I"m already calling 911. Running up to the accident site. Motorcycle is wedged at an angle between a Honda and a Nissan. Door is ripped off the honda. doesn't take long to figure out what happened.
Either accidental or intentional, cyclist got "clotheslined" (I think it's the term) by a honda civic on the right hand side. Cyclist thrown over the handlebars headfirst into the back of a truck. It doesn't serve me well to describe the accident scene, but he was most certainly dead. A lot of upset people. A whole lot of blood.
Look, I realize you're all "Ride Or Die" and all that, but I don't think you get what that really means. I will NEVER forget what I saw that afternoon. Some stupid kid showing off on a bike who's time was soooo much more important than everyone else's got himself killed doing the same thing so many of you brag about doing on a regular basis. Wheverever that idiot was in such a hurry to get to, he's definately going to be late.
Slow down. You'll get there.
Editor's Note: I don't support the pious tone of this account, but I'm not censoring it either. Lane Splitting is legal in some states. Should be legal in all because it is safer for the biker. Even where it is illegal, it is merely a traffic infraction or at worst a misdemeanor. Assault with a car door and 2nd Degree murder on the other hand are much more heinous crimes. One has to wonder why some asshole in an air conditioned cage thinks he has a right to slow down, scare or stop someone sitting on a 400 degree engine that chose heightened mobility over comfort. I know one thing from watching motorists, if their cages fit between the lanes, they'd be lane splitting too. |

| 2002.01.24 | Grokdoc | While headed home from work, I was east bound on 132nd approaching 25th av SE. A small truck took a right onto 132nd just as i had chnged from left to right lanes. I had the green light. I was unable to stop and hit left rear of truck. Destroyed my frontend, both floorboards and foot controls, 1 engineguard bent back and bent front exhaust pipe.
I was uninjured...

| 2002.01.23 | Bronze | It was a dark and drizzly night. Heading S/B on Elliot Ave towards the on-ramp to Hwy 99. Was following a mini-van, and looked up to towards the on-ramp. When the mini-van continued left, I started to veer right to the on-ramp. I drilled the curb/sidewalk where they had extended it into where the on-ramp used to start. Wound up going headfirst down the sidewalk. Ouch. Luckily, nothing broken. Sore as hell. Gear took the brunt of impact, wear good stuff! Helmet, gloves, and boots are toast, but not a bit of road rash. Bike came out pretty well (cosmetic). The Givi bags protected it nicely. The meteor strikes every two inches on the curb indicate I'm not the only one to do this. I hope it's only been (will be) cages. |
|
| 2002.01.10 | Gerry of Malvern | East bound on MD Rt.70 between Hagerstown and Thurmont, MD. At the only pull off available oil has been carefully poured on the highway at the down hill left hand turn in the road. Police have been advised of this problem and they noted they were aware of the problem but can not catch the person pouring the oil. I have returned to the scene about one year later and the oil is still being poured on the roadway. Because I was traveling slowly rather than hit a friend only bike damage occured....$2500.00 plus my safety suit was damaged. |

| 2001.12.10 | Ex Aprilia Pilot | All I'll say is dont forget the disc lock. Especially when there's people looking. One sore ankle. |
|
| 2001.11.15 | Ex Aprilia Pilot | Not really a crash this one, but anyway: Aprilia RS50, typical problem - electrics (need I have even said?!) DONT MESS WITH THE HT CIRCUIT!! Stopper isnt working, have to turn off bike by stalling. A pain in the ass. Decide its too much of a pain in the ass. Find which wire makes bike stop when cut. OK no problem, insert switch. holding twistgrip, palm touching endweight, press (metal) switch. Complete the circuit, via my chest. Many, many volts through me, get knee ready and hit bike with it. sore. Bike falls. No damage. Injuries: hair standing on end. Decide stalling isnt such a pain in the ass. |
|
| 2001.10.27 | Tapper | Highsided. Locked up the rear wheel, (DA) in a left turn (too hot) I was thrown across an intersection. (2 lanes 16 feet) I landed on my right knee and elbow, and rollled out. I had 10cc of fluid drained 2 weeks later. The knee still hurts. I broke my break pedal, and right mirror. The right fairing and tail got scratched, but not bad enough to spend the $ for a new one.

| 2001.10.01 | Robert Ballew | I-30 approach to I-40 exchange at 5:10 PM. Weather dry, traffic moderate. Got hit from behind while stopped in traffic, had previously been traveling about 40 to 45 MPH. Was shoved into the back seat. The trunk on the bike saved me from flipping completely off, would have been better unless I would have been run over. The bike got launched and contacted the bumper of the car in front of me, probably 7 to 10 feet distance. Upon hitting that bumper I came forward, very fast, couldn't regain the grips but the helmet did a dive on the top edge of the windscreen. Luckily I had on the helmet otherwise I would have been scalped just like in the Westerns of childhood. On hitting the screen I guess I rolled off the bike because when I hit the pavement I regained some form of being alive. Off came the helmet, what the hell did I do? Just what did I do. Seeing the young lady getting out of her car on the cell phone...gee thanks for calling someone to check on me because I had no knowledge of what happened. What?...you hit me...hmmm! out of state, rush hour traffic, cell phone use (trying to find her way through Little Rock). Oh shit! wreck city. Still fuzzy I request a DL & insurance. Trooper arrives and asked me if I'm OK. What?... Blah, Blah. Later I get to leave, bike feels real funny so I check it out at speed. This is not right. I find a phone and call the girl's insurance, oh shit agin. Been canceled 6 months ago. Luckily I have UM. Since that time, $9,650 bike repairs. Medical is now up around 15 grand and still counting because of the two enlarged cervical vertebra and concussion. After thoughts, you're never OK after any wreck. The bike looked like about 3 grand to repair, damn, I'm in the wrong business. |

| 2001.10.01 | sarge | What happened? Arythmic heart beat caused black out on last part of sharp "S" curve to the left. Went straight off road ripping two top strands off barb wire fence that was ten feet out and eight down from road shoulder. Bike nose-dived on left side and I went over handle bars flying thru second barb wire fence that was fifteen feet away. Hit left side of head and left shoulder on steel fence post. I was wearing full helmet but still ended up with minor concussion, but no broken bones. Btw, leather is cheaper than skin, as I received no cuts or scratches from barb wire. Tank, engine guard bar, speedo, and complete front end req uired replacing. Now a daily pill keeps heart beat steady and I will be back riding next spring.

| 2001.09.15 | rookie tough guy | Nice cool day just got out of work, it was about 4pm and a light drizzle started to fall. I nauturaly decide to head in, i round the corner to head to my pad, i live at the end of a dead end street. Of course SINCE it had been RAINING i'm not gonna try a wheelie only 50yards from my house................ttttsssssssss yeah right, dumb ass me drops it a gear or two and throws the front wheel in the air, ok cool it went good, now im 15 yards from my nice soft front lawn and not so kind 6 inch high curb. i lock up the back wheel and start a figure skating move. I hit the 6inch curb i mention earlier, and did a superman right off the brand new 2001 honda cbr 600f4i onto the soft lawn i mentioned earlier. thank you god for not letting me remember to cut the hay field, no major damage, brused back and ego |

| 2001.08.29 | Busapilot | Decided to go for a short ride. Not wearing my leathers. Just a tee-shirt, jeans, gloves, & helmet. There is a very sharp corner on a country road close by. I thought, instead of braking into the corner and excelerating out of the apex, I would accelerate through the corner. Just as I made my cut through the apex, leaning way over, the back wheel began spinning, real quick, real unexpectedly. The back end came around and I went down. First I was behind the bike, but ended up in front of the bike. Much road rash and tearing of forearms. Ruptured tendon in left ring finger. Sprained and contused left ankle. Helmet trashed, gloves sort of trashed, jeans and boots trashed. At 50mph it could have been worse. Next time I'll be wearing my jacket. The bike wasn't in bad shape. Bent clip-on, broken clutch lever, trashed exhaust can & left side plastic. Oh well. Live and learn. It's funny how people ask you if you are going to give up riding motorcycles after something like this. In spite of my forty some odd years and six kids I say Hell No! |

| 2001.08.18 | Agent Smith | Went for a long (400 m) ride on my 01 Monster 750 and thought it would be clever to listen to music on earbuds inside helmet. About mile 300 on the Ortega Highway the BPM increases to about 120 due to hot Oakenfold track. Speed increases proportionally. Oakenfold whispering in my ear, I decide to pass a slow-moving cage on the outside of a (unbeknownest to me) decreasing-radius turn. Turn begins to decrease, Muffler begins to scrape on ground,I hit rear brake. rear slides out a bit, I catch it, sit up, and hit cliff wall at 25 MPH. Wake up on back, bike 50 feet down road, try to sit up, scream, lay back down, go to hospital.
Front wheel looks like PacMan - folded front forks, 2 inch hole in helmet, scrapes all over legs, back, shoulders. CAT says nothing broken, but deep tissue damage 1 inch from spine makes walking excruciating for 3 months. Still have a dent in my lower back. Thank you Arai, HJC leathers. No more music while riding. |
|
| 2001.06.28 | Jboy | Southbound 99 in north Seattle. BDC crossed two lanes of traffic, pulled in front of me and stopped. Grabbed too much front brake, low-sided into the turn lane. Didn't hit the car (which left). Damage to bike: left-side fairing and bellypan. Damage to gear: helmet and gloves needed replacing. Damage to rider: broken left collarbone. |
|
| 2001.05.18 | Major | What happened? Highway 336 outside Leakey, TX, Major was riding new ZX9r on long left-hand sweeper. Knee down, three digits on the speedo...things were really looking good...then a whitetail deer decides to occupy the same space-time as the front wheel of the Ninja. This was not pretty. Bike crashes into canyon wall and rider does several flips 20 feet into the air resulting in a broken right femur. Fortunately quality leathers, helment and back protector prevented fatal injuries. Oh, the deer got up and ran off. |
|
| 2001.05.03 | Les DeFoor | GSX-R 1100, Mary's Peak road. Downbownd, mile post 7.8 at the nose. Large crack in road extending entire lenght of lane and same angle as left lean. Riding partner went down in front of me (oh what a pretty sight - sparks all over). Leaned in more, both tires hit crack (approx 6-8 inches wide and 4 inches deep. Tires hit other side of crack and high sided. Speed 25 - 30. Bike totalled (right side), personal inguries, Fractured Left Radial Head, Right foot, right thumb, two sugeries, thee pins and two screws later. As of 08.16.01, entering physical theropy to regain movement. |
|
| 2001.04.21 | Ariane Mather | Rear-ended in slow traffic by 18yr old kid who "just looked away for a second."
Bike was rideable. I'm bruised and sore. |
|
| 2001.04.06 | Chris Jones | I was riding through a series of residential backroads. One left-hand turn (SE Butler and Binford in Gresham)that has recently become an intersection had all manner of traction reduction in it. I got the bike leaned over to make the left hand turn and the bike just kept going down.
I wonder if it was the front wheel letting go, because it was an extremely different feeling from the times the rear wheel has come loose. Oh well, conversation material for the FF.

|
| 2001.04.04 | Dave | What happened? Takeing downhill left hander. Car coming in opposite direction takes half my lane. At this point I decide to panic. I swerved and locked brakes and landed in a clearing on the side of the mountain. $2200 damage to fairing and a bruise the size of a baseball on my butt the final result. Car decides I wasn't importaint enough to stop. |
|
| 2001.03.15 | Geoff Nell | Riding XR500 on the dunes at Swakopmund in Namibia, sand dissapeared unexpectedly, dropped about 15 feet with very inelegant landing. Broken collarbone, 3 ribs, slight internal damage. Bike perfect. Painful 3 days on the road home. |
|
| 2001.01.01 | Logan Seymore | What happened?
Applied front brake while front wheel in slush on road. Wearing full face helmet, leather/cordura jacket and pants, cycle boots, gloves. Cracked rib. |
|
| 2001.01.01 | Joe W. | Left turn in Princeton, NJ. Notoriously short green light. Tailgating VW slams into the car in front of it. Joe, behind the VW is faced with eating the car of putting the bike down. Puts the bike down. 2001 SV650 (second crash already - 1st due to new, cold tires) damaged: Helmet takes the brunt of the fall after hard braking causes jacknife...bent bar, bent clutch grib, gashed tank, scraped forks and tachometer ripped clean off. Oh well...here's an excuse to do the custom work planned. Good gashed knee, painful ribs, twisted wrist and a bit dizzy for a day. |
|
| 2000.12.26 | Grokdoc | While headed southbound on I5 I exited in Seattle at the James street exit. While decelerating, I moved from right to left lane. Rear wheel hit "turtles" and slid out from under me. Was thrown thru the air and landed hard on the pavement, rolling up exit ramp. Destroyed ligaments in left wrist. 4 broken ribs. Broken rt shoulder. Broken rt collarbone. Spent 4 days in harborview and subsequently endured 2 seperate surgeries to repair left wrist.
Bike was totaled. |
|
| 2000.11.17 | Matthew O. | What happened? 30mph high side from cold pavement and tires. Happened a block from my house at about 7AM. |
|
| 2000.10.07 | Mike Krueger | Dazzled by a bright shaft of sunlight, our protagonist fails to observe oh-so-important warning sign of downhill grade and 15 mph curves ahead. Entering the corner waaay off line, the road drops away into a menacing decreasing radius, off camber, inattentive idiot consuming corner. Already dragging the peg feelers and watching the apex disappear over his left shoulder, aforementioned inattentive idiot vainly attempts to hang off his 15 year old UJM (with 48,000 mi. rear shcocks) to eke out last few mm of ground clearance. The gods laughed and struck him down for his insolence as the centerstand levers the rear wheel off the pavement, and deposits rider and steed firmly into the gaurdrail. Rider is merely bruised, bike is more-so. Tank, bars, master cylinder, both rear turn signals, both mirrors, side panels, and case covers take a thorough rogering at the hands of the DOT's steel minion. Rider raises welts through self-flagellation with makeshift cat-o-nine-tails. |
|
| 2000.09.19 | Ricky | Page Mill above Palo Alto, riding a friend's Ducati 900SS broke hard for a hairpin as lizardbrain was telling me I was going too fast for it, threw it in and made the turn before the center line, and then couldn't convince my clutch hand to let go of the clutch. Facing uphill, this is non-optimal and ended with my falling onto the right (downhill) side. Broken front brake lever, front right fairing, turn signal lens. |
|
| 2000.08.12 | sparticus | What happened? cruising down a main rd,in a suburb of sydney australia,lunchtime,30kms/hr cager slows to a stop on opposite side of rd waits to turn into side rd,being sure she saw me i still preceeded with caution having a bad feeling about this one??? just before i get to the point of passing her she then decides to turn, way to late for any logical reaction,i snatch a handfull of front brake, highside,as im going over and down, back quarter of her car just whisks past full face helmet, hit ground, bike slides circular patterns all the way to the curb about 20 mtrs, i try to stand but cant, she stops, looks back and then takes off, luck has it it is witnessed by a group of cops coming out of social club after their lunch and got her number, they pick me up and retrieve my 97 suzuki, she paid 2500 for bike plus jeans and new helmet plus payout for smashed right knee.she is banned from driving permanent, this is good considering she was 83 yrs old!!.alls well and a new cbr awaits. |
|
| 2000.08.08 | Sean Grimme | Sean died Tuesday night, August 8th, around 8pm, on NE 128th St near Woodinville-Redmond Road. He was riding his motorcycle, something I suspect he would find appropriate. Friends behind him said he was braking hard when his front wheel must have locked. The ensuing slide caused him to drift into the oncoming lane where he fell and preceded his bike down the road under an oncoming pick-up truck. He was unresponsive on the scene and pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
He is missed. |
|
| 2000.08.07 | mik | ok. not exactly a crash. a dumbass suv pulled out, expecting to only encounter traffic from ONE direction on northup wy. right. i did a very tall stoppie, ending up two actual inches from the driver's door.
i will learn to zip my jacket pockets, i will miss my motorola star-tac. |
|
| 2000.07.28 | Brian Bucknam | Brand new rear tire with only 200 yards on it combined with slightly more-than-normal throttle from a stop sign causes instant low-side. SV650's crash really well -- blinker, clutch lever, shift lever & linkage, and kickstand get bent or broken. Fork is scratched. Rider is unharmed. |
|
| 2000.07.23 | Jesse James Cesek | Jesse had just sold his motorcycle and took a short ride down the street. With the new owner waiting in his driveway he turned around and started home.
A neighbor, an (80 Year Old ~SEMI-BLIND~ Legally Licensed State of Ohio Driver) turned into her driveway in front of him. She said that she didn't see his bright yellow motorcycle with the headlight on. How could she, she can't see very well. How did she get her drivers license renewed? I wasn't there to watch her.
Jesse had just turned 20 years old.
P.S. She has a new van . .

| 2000.07.10 | Jodi Holben | While exiting Highway 88 over the Sierras into a rest stop, Cyber and Jodi hit 1" of gravel across the entire exit. Jodi didn't see it so while still leaned over for the exit the front end washed out at ~25MPH. The Ninjette receives a demolished front turn signal, right foot peg, right clip-on, and the already not perfect bodywork gets more scratches and a few cracks now. Chase Harper saddlebags hold up pretty well with only a few small holes that can be patched. Jodi receives road rash on the right knee, a torqued back and right shoulder, and many bumps, bruises, and sore bits. Parts are sent from Seattle to South Lake Tahoe but injuries prevent riding further a few days later and bikes are trucked home in a rental moving truck. |
|
| 2000.07.10 | Pete Young | What happened? In the 2nd gear wrinkly bits of CA155 above Glenville, CA.,beer and ice laden Connie loses traction on rear via over enthusiastic throttle application on lightly sanded tarmac. Rt saddlebag holed, windshield broken, belly pan and lower fairing lightly scraped. Operator and beer unscathed. Consoled self forthe balance of the week that the ignominy of the broken shield was made up for in cooling wind flow whilst crossing hot valleys. |
|
| 2000.06.29 | Chris Bishop | Was coming down Mary's Peak road when tar that had accumulated on my tires earlier in the ride provided less than optimal traction. I lowsided on the first hard left and threw my 96 900SS 25 feet down the side of a cliff. Bashed all the plastic and dented the tank. Kilamanjaro Jacket and Hypertek pants did their job well and limited my injuries to half a dozen fractured ribs. Not bad for a roll off the side of a moutain. |
|
| 2000.06.24 | Jack | What happened? I pestered Vernon Wade into letting me ride his Speed Tripple with sidecar.
I promptly drove it straight into a curb at about 30mph. Totaled the bike. Walked away with a scraped knee. |
|
| 2000.06.10 | Warren Polensky | Chasing the Moose in BC Warren braincramps in a downhill right hand hairpin, runs wide into gravel strip at edge of road and lowsides. Darien suit and Concours plastic sacrificed to new chip-seal. |
|
| 2000.06.01 | Linn Kirk | Smart enough to find secluded parking lot away from friends. Dropped CBR while attempting to lay a patch for the first time. |
|
| 2000.06.01 | Alex G | 35-40 MPH traffic on Staten Island expressway. My first year of riding. "know a lot about yer front brake dude..." driver in front of me doesn't pay attention, stops short, starts sverving. Car behind me screeches starts sverving. Panic, grab front brake , High side I go over the handlebars "superman" land on pavement around a foot from aforementioned car. scratches on helmet bye-bye jacket, knee out of place bruises, thats about it for me. Bike Yamaha Seca XJ600 '93 windshield mirrors left bodywork busted, upper fairing busted with holes, shift lever bent. Rolled away, got up. flipped the driver off. Although I couldn't walk, rode away anyways . |
|
| 2000.05.10 | Andy Bookwalter | Hit a patch of oil or diesel on Spokane St. in Seattle. Whatever it was, it was the slipperiest stuff in the world. Went down on the left side, inexplicably broke my right thumb. Got surgery, got a pin in my thumb, got good painkillers. |
|
| 2000.05.06 | Erston | Lowsided BMW Demo R1100R about 5 minutes from my house, attempting to make a right turn in stealth gravel. Multiple bystanders stepped up until the air cars arrived. Damage to bike is (hopefully) cosmetic, no injuries or even badly damaged gear. My Ego and Pride did not survive the event. |
|
| 2000.04.12 | SSMark | BlueHair (tm) in a big green Caddy wants to make a left from the right lane. Pushes me into the median where I have the choice of hitting a large curb or leaning hard and sliding in behind her. I chose the lean and slide, slide turns into a high side. Not good. Bike's left side is pretty much toasted. I survive with a bit of road rash on my knees. I look like a kid who fell of his bike. I guess I am. |
|
| 2000.04.01 | myself | What happened? ridin my wee cuzins motorcycle it was a 500cc honda. riding it down the road at 50mph in a 30mph zone. car came infront of me, smacked my front wheel and went over, ended up with a broken neck and a broken bike |
